In 2401, retired admiral Jean-Luc Picard is chancellor of Starfleet Academy, and he gently turns down the affections of Laris, his housekeeper and friend. Over a drink he confides in Guinan about a lifetime of avoiding romantic attachment. In deep space, Captain Rios and Dr Agnes Jurati of the USS Stargazer investigate a spatial anomaly that is broadcasting a request, addressed to Picard, to negotiate entry into the Federation. Seven of Nine, now a vigilante flying Rios's old ship La Sirena, joins them, along with a fleet that includes the USS Excelsior, carrying Raffi and Elnor. When Picard arrives, a Borg ship emerges and its Queen beams aboard the Stargazer and begins assimilating the fleet. Picard triggers the Stargazer's self-destruct. He wakes in a strangely altered version of his own home, where Q is waiting to put him on trial once more.
- 01Whoopi Goldberg returns as Guinan, a role she last played in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis.
- 02The new USS Stargazer, NCC-82893, honours Picard's first command, the USS Stargazer (NCC-2893), seen in TNG's “The Battle”.
- 03Madeline Wise plays Picard's mother Yvette in flashbacks. The character was previously played by Herta Ware in TNG's “Where No One Has Gone Before”.
