In a brutal flashback, Seven of Nine arrives too late to save her friend Icheb, whose Borg implants have been ripped out by the black-market dealer Bjayzl, and is forced to end his suffering. Now travelling with La Sirena, Seven learns that Bjayzl is holding Bruce Maddox on Freecloud and plans to sell him to the Romulans. The crew set up an exchange, with Picard posing as a swaggering rogue with an outrageous French accent and Seven offered as bait. Seven's real aim is revenge. Picard talks her out of it and Maddox is rescued, but she later returns alone and kills Bjayzl. Meanwhile, Raffi tries to reconcile with her son Gabriel, who turns her away. In sickbay, Maddox tells Picard he placed Dahj and Soji in different places to uncover the truth behind the synth ban. Once Picard leaves, Jurati, Maddox's former lover, kills him.
