Archer, Reed and Hoshi return from secretly observing a pre-warp society on the edge of war, and Reed realises his communicator is missing. Archer and Reed go back to retrieve it, only to be caught by the local military, who have already found the device and take them for spies of the rival Alliance. General Gosis seizes their equipment, and rough interrogation exposes their disguises and alien biology. To protect the truth, Archer claims they are genetically engineered Alliance soldiers, which convinces Gosis they must be executed and examined. On the Enterprise, T'Pol tries to find the prisoners, while Tucker races to repair the captured Suliban cell ship and accidentally turns his own arm invisible. With the cloaked ship, Tucker and Mayweather snatch Archer and Reed from the gallows, and the equipment is recovered. But the damage is done, and Archer must live with the effect his mistake may have on a world preparing for war.
