A hidden mine cripples the Enterprise, and when a second one fastens itself to the hull, Reed must go outside to disarm it.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Archer's attempt at a friendly breakfast with the stiff, formal Reed goes nowhere. Soon afterwards the Enterprise strikes a cloaked mine near an uncharted planet, causing heavy damage and many injuries. A second mine latches onto the hull, and Reed goes out in an environmental suit to disarm it, but a spike from the device drives through his leg and pins him in place. Archer suits up and works on the mine under Reed's guidance, and as the hours pass the two men finally talk. Then a ship decloaks: the Romulans, who claim the planet and demand the Enterprise leave, with no interest in helping. When disarming fails, Tucker prepares to cut away the hull section, which would kill Reed. Instead Archer detaches the plating with the mine attached, cuts Reed free and shields them both with shuttle hatches as the mine explodes. Both survive, and the Enterprise escapes.
- 01John Shiban's first Enterprise credit, after seven years on The X-Files. He drew inspiration from the Second World War bomb disposal series Danger UXB.
- 02This is humanity's first contact with the Romulans, though their cloaking technology sits awkwardly with “Balance of Terror”.
- 03Dominic Keating said the space suits weighed a ton and he lost five pounds that week. Scott Bakula injured his back during production.
