At dinner marking T'Pol's year aboard, Archer asks why she once visited Carbon Creek, Pennsylvania. She tells the story of her great-grandmother T'Mir. In 1957, after the launch of Sputnik, a Vulcan survey ship crashes near the mining town, killing its captain. T'Mir takes command, and with no rescue in sight she, Mestral and Stron disguise themselves and go into town for food. Over the following months they settle into ordinary lives, renting from Maggie, a tavern owner and single mother. Mestral grows fascinated by humans, and T'Mir warms to Maggie's bright son Jack, who cannot afford college. When a mine accident traps workers, Mestral secretly uses Vulcan technology to free them. As rescue finally approaches, T'Mir sells the idea for Velcro in Pittsburgh to pay for Jack's education, and Mestral chooses to stay on Earth. Archer and Tucker doubt the tale, but T'Pol still has T'Mir's handbag.
