A meeting with the Kreetassans ends badly when the crew unknowingly offends them by eating in front of them. After their ship leaves, an unseen life form is left behind on the Enterprise. During a film night it attacks, trapping Archer, Tucker and other crew members in a mass of tendrils in a cargo bay. Phase pistols are useless, and Reed escapes only by cutting off one tendril with the cargo bay door. Phlox finds the captives are being drawn into a symbiotic link with the creature, while attempts to drive it off with energy bursts also hurt the people it holds. Hoshi realises the creature's emissions are a form of language and works with T'Pol to decode it. The Kreetassans, who now speak English, explain their taboo and supply the coordinates of the being's home. Once it understands, the creature releases the crew, and on its homeworld it rejoins a vast organism of which it was only a part.
- 01The title is Latin for “lone voice”. The episode was originally called “The Needs of the One”.
- 02Vaughn Armstrong's Kreetassan make-up took six to seven hours to apply, and he called it the most challenging of his many Star Trek roles.
- 03Visual effects coordinator Liz Castro, with Dan Curry, combined practical goo on actors and models with computer-generated tendrils.
