Rumours of a haunted ship lead Archer to a wrecked vessel on a barren world, where a small crew is living a life that doesn't quite add up.

A trader tells the crew of a derelict ship on a desolate planet that is said to be haunted. An away team finds it is not abandoned at all: an armed Kantare crew is living aboard, and they say raiders attacked their ship three years ago. The evidence tells another story. The damage shows no sign of weapons fire, the corrosion suggests the crash happened about two decades ago, and the food supply could never feed so many. A body in an escape pod belongs to someone the away team has just met alive. The truth is that only two of the Kantare are real: Ezral, the former chief engineer, and his daughter Liana. Haunted by a disaster in an ion storm that cost half his crew their lives, Ezral has filled the ship with holograms of the dead, including his late wife, partly for Liana's sake. Facing reality, he asks Archer for help to make the ship spaceworthy again.
- 01Annie Wersching, who plays Liana, later played the Borg Queen in the second season of Star Trek: Picard.
- 02Tom Bergeron, best known as host of Hollywood Squares, made his acting debut as D'Marr. He returned in the season four episode “Demons”.
- 03René Auberjonois, Odo in Deep Space Nine, saw echoes of the DS9 episode “Shadowplay”, and of Prospero and Miranda from Shakespeare's The Tempest.
