Archer persuades T'Pol to arrange a visit to P'Jem, a Vulcan monastery thousands of years old where monks pursue a life of pure logic. The away team arrives to find Andorian soldiers, led by the hot-tempered Commander Shran, holding the monks hostage. The Andorians are convinced the monastery hides a Vulcan spying post, and they take Archer, T'Pol and Tucker prisoner too. Shran's interrogation of Archer turns violent. Aboard Enterprise, Reed prepares a rescue, and with the monks' help Tucker gets an old transmitter working so Archer can signal the ship. Reed's team beams into the catacombs and fights the Andorians. In the confusion Archer uncovers a hidden door behind which sits a modern sensor array, proof that the Andorians were right. Archer lets Shran leave with the evidence, and the Andorian commander admits he is in Archer's debt.
- 01Jeffrey Combs makes his debut as Shran. He was offered the part without auditioning, and based the character partly on James Cagney.
- 02Directed by Roxann Dawson, B'Elanna Torres in Voyager, who became one of the show's regular directors.
- 03Production designer Herman Zimmerman called it the most challenging episode of season one, apart from the pilot, because of the monastery set.
