Two weeks into its mission, Enterprise has found little beyond plants and a sickly alien slug, and Ensign Hoshi Sato is struggling to settle aboard. The crew then comes across an Axanar ship drifting with weapons damage. Archer leads an away team and discovers the crew dead, with tubes fitted into their bodies. T'Pol advises leaving well alone, and Archer at first agrees, but his conscience sends him back. Phlox establishes that a valuable fluid has been harvested from the victims. When the killers' ship returns, Enterprise's targeting problems leave it outgunned. Then a second Axanar vessel arrives, believing the humans responsible, and Hoshi, battling her nerves, must talk to them in their own language. She persuades them of the truth, and the Axanar destroy the attacking ship. At the end Hoshi and Phlox release the slug on a suitable planet.
- 01John Billingsley found the spacesuits difficult and pulled off his prosthetic ears while removing his helmet during filming.
- 02The Axanar had been mentioned in the original series episodes “Court Martial” and “Whom Gods Destroy”.
