Burnham's team arrives on Trill, where Guardian Xi sets her a riddle before introducing her to Kalzara Bix, an elderly host whose symbiont, Jinaal, was one of the scientists who hid the Progenitors' technology. Through the zhian'tara ritual, Jinaal's personality is placed in Culber's body. Jinaal leads Burnham and Book into wild canyons and sets a final test: fierce creatures that seem to threaten them are really guarding their eggs, and only by showing compassion can the pair pass. Jinaal explains that the scientists hid their discovery after one of them died trying to use it, to keep it from being misused. He hands over the next piece of the map before returning to Bix. Elsewhere, Rayner learns to connect with his new crew, Saru and T'Rina face political pressure over their engagement, and Adira and Gray agree to part as friends. Unseen by the crew, Moll has slipped into the ceremony in disguise.
