J'Vini, a Romulan from Ni'Var and a nun of the Qowat Milat, has been stealing rare dilithium from Starfleet ships, and in one raid she killed an officer. With Ni'Var close to rejoining the Federation, President Rillak is wary of acting without President T'Rina's blessing. Burnham's mother Gabrielle, herself a Qowat Milat, believes J'Vini has found a cause worth fighting for, and joins her daughter to bring her in. They track her to what looks like a barren moon but is really a huge starship carrying refugees in suspended animation. Unable to revive them, J'Vini needed the dilithium to move the ship out of the anomaly's path. Burnham arrests her but helps wake the refugees and move their ship, and is troubled when J'Vini is handed to Ni'Var. On Ni'Var, a mind meld with T'Rina lets Book relive memories of Leto. Meanwhile, Gray is finally transferred into his new body.
