Book is numb with grief after the loss of Kwejian and his family, and keeps seeing visions of his nephew Leto. Stamets explains to President Rillak and Starfleet Command that the planet was destroyed by a gravitational anomaly unlike anything on record, and Discovery is sent to study it. Saru returns to the ship as Burnham's first officer. Early readings disprove the crew's theories, so Book offers to fly his own ship into the anomaly's debris field to gather data, with Stamets helping from Discovery. Burnham worries about his state of mind but finally lets him go, and the dangerous mission succeeds. Then the anomaly abruptly changes course, battering Discovery and leaving the crew unable to predict where it will strike next. Afterwards Book begins to open up to Burnham about his grief. Meanwhile Culber and Adira work on giving Gray a synthetic body, using the technology that once saved Jean-Luc Picard.
