Kobayashi Maru

Captain Michael Burnham and Book help the people of Alshain IV repair their long-broken technology, a gesture meant to coax them back into the Federation. Book then heads home to Kwejian for his nephew Leto's coming-of-age ceremony, while Discovery attends the reopening of Starfleet Academy, where the crew meet the new Federation President, Laira Rillak. Meanwhile Saru, back on Kaminar, urges his people to rejoin the wider galaxy. When a repair station near Kwejian sends a distress call, Rillak joins the mission. An unexplained gravitational distortion has sent the station spinning out of control, and Burnham takes personal charge of the dangerous evacuation. Most of the crew are saved, but the station's commander is killed. Rillak reveals she was weighing Burnham for a new assignment and has doubts about her appetite for risk. On Kwejian, Book notices strange behaviour among the birds and flies up to investigate, moments before the distortion destroys the planet, killing his brother and nephew.
