Book receives word that his homeworld, Kwejian, is threatened by a plague of locusts, and the Emerald Chain is exploiting the crisis. Discovery accompanies him, but the Chain's leader Osyraa arrives in her ship, the Viridian, demanding the return of the Andorian Ryn, whom Book and Burnham freed. Book reunites with his estranged brother Kyheem. With the Federation unable to fight openly, Detmer pilots Book's ship against the Chain in a daring unauthorised run. Burnham realises that Book and Kyheem's shared empathic abilities can help, and the brothers together guide the swarm away, foiling the Chain. Book then commits to joining Discovery. Aboard ship, Adira asks to be addressed as they, which their friends readily accept, Georgiou's blackouts continue, and Stamets and Adira trace the Burn to the Verubin Nebula.
