Data from the black boxes shows that the Burn did not strike everywhere at once, so its point of origin can be traced. The key is the SB-19 research held on Ni'Var, the former Vulcan, which left the Federation believing its own project caused the disaster. Burnham learns that Spock's dream of reunification came true: Vulcans and Romulans now share the planet. To obtain the data, she invokes the T'Kal-in-ket, a formal Vulcan debate before a scientific quorum. Her advocate proves to be her mother, Gabrielle, now a member of the Qowat Milat. Burnham openly admits her own doubts and withdraws her case. Impressed by her honesty, President T'Rina shares the data anyway. Meanwhile Saru chooses Tilly as acting first officer, and Burnham, who had been questioning her place, recommits to Discovery and its crew.
