Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Adira cannot reach the memories of the symbiont they carry, memories that may lead Discovery to the Federation. Burnham takes them to Trill, but the Trill leadership is hostile to the idea of a human host, and Adira is attacked. Guardian Xi becomes an unexpected ally and leads them to the Caves of Mak'ala, where Burnham follows Adira into their mind. Adira recovers their past: life aboard a generational ship with their partner Gray Tal, a joined Trill, and the accident that killed Gray and left Adira to receive the symbiont. Facing the symbiont's earlier hosts, Adira finally embraces them and gains Senna Tal's knowledge, including the location of Federation headquarters. On Discovery, Saru's attempt at a relaxing crew dinner brings simmering tensions to the surface, and the crew unwind over an old film. Afterwards, Adira finds that Gray is still with them in some way.
- 01Ian Alexander debuts as Gray Tal, described as the first transgender character in the Star Trek franchise.
- 02The writers worked with GLAAD in developing Adira and Gray, as there were no non-binary or transgender writers on staff.
- 03The Caves of Mak'ala first appeared in the Deep Space Nine episode “Equilibrium”.
