That Hope Is You, Part 1

Michael Burnham emerges from the wormhole in 3188 and collides with the ship of Cleveland "Book" Booker, a courier, sending both crashing onto a planet. After a brawl, the two form a wary partnership. Book's cargo turns out to be a rare trance worm, and Burnham helps him keep it out of the hands of rival couriers. Along the way she learns how much has changed: a disaster called the Burn destroyed most of the galaxy's dilithium over a century ago, Starfleet is a shadow of itself, the Federation has fractured, and time travel has been outlawed since the Temporal Wars. At a trading outpost she is drugged and interrogated before she and Book escape. Discovery is nowhere to be found. Burnham finally reaches a remote Federation relay station, where she finds Aditya Sahil, who has kept his post for decades in the hope that the Federation would return. Inspired, Burnham resolves to help restore what was lost.
