Discovery's crew say goodbye to Airiam at a funeral where friends share eulogies and Saru sings a Kelpien lament. Data recovered from Airiam shows that the Red Angel's biological signature matches Burnham's, and the crew conclude that she is the Angel, travelling back from the future. Leland reveals that Burnham's parents worked for Section 31 on Project Daedalus, a secret effort to build a time travel suit before the Klingons could, and confesses that his actions led the Klingons to them. Burnham and Spock propose a trap: if the Angel always comes to save Burnham, then putting her life in danger should summon it. Pike reluctantly agrees. On the planet Essof IV, Burnham is exposed to the poisonous atmosphere while a containment field waits for the Angel. She briefly dies before it appears and revives her. The trap holds, and the figure inside the suit is unmasked: it is Burnham's mother, Gabrielle.
- 01Gabrielle Burnham is played by Sonja Sohn, an alumna of the HBO drama The Wire.
