On its way to Vulcan to collect a new captain, Discovery answers a distress call from the USS Enterprise. Its captain, Christopher Pike, comes aboard with orders to take command: his own ship is crippled, and Starfleet wants him to investigate seven mysterious red signals that appeared at once across the galaxy. The nearest leads to an asteroid hurtling towards a pulsar, where the wrecked medical ship Hiawatha lies. Pike, Burnham and an Enterprise team fly down in pods, losing science officer Connolly on the way, and find engineer Jett Reno, who has kept the injured crew alive for months. During the rescue Burnham, in mortal danger, glimpses a winged red figure. Tilly secures a fragment of the asteroid's strange matter, and Stamets reveals he plans to leave the ship. Burnham, haunted by memories of growing up with Spock, learns he has taken leave, and finds a personal log linking his recurring nightmares to the signals.
