The Vulcan starship T'Kumbra docks at Deep Space Nine under Captain Solok, who has long regarded Sisko as a rival and considers his all-Vulcan crew superior in every way. Solok challenges Sisko to a game of baseball in the holosuite, and Sisko accepts, despite having just two weeks to train a team of officers, friends and Ferengi who barely know the game. Sisko's intensity alarms everyone, and when he drops the clumsy Rom, the players come close to mutiny. He finally tells Kasidy the root of the grudge, a humiliating encounter with Solok at Starfleet Academy that Solok later held up as proof of Vulcan superiority. On match day the Logicians build a crushing lead and Sisko is thrown out for touching the umpire. He brings Rom back, and Rom lays down a lucky bunt that lets Nog score. The Niners lose 10 to 1, but celebrate their single run in Quark's like a victory, to Solok's disgust.

- 02Max Grodénchik is a real-life baseball player who considered going pro, so he played left-handed on camera to look unskilled.
