Ezri Dax, the symbiont's new host, is overwhelmed by the memories of Dax's past lives, and her presence is painful for Jadzia's friends, above all Worf, who wants nothing to do with her. Sisko offers her a permanent post as station counsellor, but she hesitates. Meanwhile Garak, decoding Cardassian communications for the Federation, is crippled by attacks of claustrophobia, and Ezri, untrained and unsure of herself, is asked to help. Her first sessions go badly, but she eventually uncovers the real cause: Garak is helping the Federation defeat his own people, and feels he is betraying Cardassia. Bringing that conflict into the open lets him face it. Sisko admits his harsh words to Ezri were reverse psychology. O'Brien persuades Worf that treating Ezri as a stranger dishonours Jadzia's memory more than accepting her, and Worf makes his peace. Ezri accepts the counsellor's post and a promotion to lieutenant junior grade.
- 01René Echevarria was halfway through his first draft before he found out who would be playing Ezri.
- 02Echevarria's original draft focused more on Garak than on Ezri.
- 03Ezri's promotion to lieutenant junior grade makes her the second Dax host to be promoted during the series.
