Jake and Nog are attacked by the Jem'Hadar and rescued by the USS Valiant, a ship crewed entirely by members of Red Squad, an elite group of Starfleet cadets. Their officers were killed in an earlier Dominion attack, and the cadets have carried on behind enemy lines ever since, with Cadet Captain Tim Watters in command. Nog is thrilled by their discipline and enthusiasm and joins them, while Jake is uneasy. Nog fixes the warp drive, and the crew complete their mission to scan a huge new Dominion battleship. Watters then decides to attack and destroy it himself. Jake argues the plan is reckless and is thrown in the brig. The attack fails, the battleship is barely scratched, and the Valiant is destroyed with nearly all hands. Jake, Nog and one surviving cadet escape and are rescued by the Defiant. Nog finally admits that Watters was a bad captain.
- 01Ronald D. Moore had wanted to call the Defiant the Valiant in the third season, but names beginning with V were off limits while Voyager was in development.
- 02Red Squad was first mentioned in “Homefront” and seen in “Paradise Lost”. David Drew Gallagher reprises his role as Riley Shepard.
- 03Majel Barrett provides the voice of the ship's computer.
