An excavation in the lost city of B'hala uncovers an ancient tablet addressed to the Emissary, and Sisko brings it to Deep Space Nine, angering Kai Winn, who was not consulted. Dax partly translates it and finds a prophecy of a Reckoning that will bring suffering to Bajor. As the wormhole behaves erratically and the station is shaken, Winn demands the tablet back. Frustrated, Sisko smashes it, releasing two energy beings. One, a Prophet, takes over Kira's body, while a Pah-wraith, an ancient enemy of the Prophets, possesses Jake. The two prepare to fight on the Promenade. Sisko trusts the Prophets and refuses to intervene, even though his son is in danger. Winn, frightened and jealous, floods the station with chroniton radiation, driving both beings away and ending the battle unresolved. Kira warns her that interfering with the Prophets will have consequences.
