Bashir brings four genetically enhanced patients to the station, and their brilliant minds turn out to be startlingly good at predicting where the Dominion War is heading.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Bashir takes charge of four genetically engineered patients whose enhancements left them unable to live ordinary lives: Jack, Lauren, Patrick and the silent Sarina. Bored and underused, they are asked to study Damar, Cardassia's new leader, as he proposes peace talks, and deduce what the Dominion really wants from peace talks. Sisko uses their insights at the negotiating table. Their confidence grows, and they model the whole war, concluding that the Federation will lose and billions will die. They argue that surrender is the only sensible choice. Sisko refuses. Bashir is horrified when the group decides to pass Starfleet secrets to the Dominion to shorten the war, and they lock him up. Sarina, who has been quietly coming out of her shell, frees him and the plan is stopped. Bashir realises that one unpredictable act by one person had overturned all their calculations.
- 01The idea of predicting the course of history with statistics drew on Isaac Asimov's Foundation novels.
- 02Director Anson Williams is best known for playing Potsie in Happy Days.
- 03Faith Salie's dialogue was cut for time, so Sarina has no spoken lines in the episode.
