Months after losing Deep Space Nine to the Dominion, Sisko argues that retaking the station would restore Federation morale, but Starfleet hesitates. Aboard the station, Rom is arrested for trying to sabotage the Dominion's plan to clear the minefield that guards the wormhole, and faces execution. Kira leads a small resistance group, but Odo, increasingly absorbed in his link with the Female Changeling, neglects the cause when Kira needs him most. When Damar lets slip that the minefield will be destroyed within days, Jake gets the warning out to his father. Sisko persuades Starfleet to act and gathers every ship he can, around six hundred, against a Dominion fleet twice that size. The episode ends with the fleet heading into battle, Sisko declaring that fortune favours the bold.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. 01The title comes from Virgil's Aeneid, Book 10: “audentes fortuna iuvat”, or fortune favours the bold. Sisko quotes the line at the end of the episode.
  2. 02Admiral Coburn is named after actor James Coburn, whose character in the film Midway raised similar objections about leaving territory exposed.
  3. 03Sisko's speech about Bajor was added at the last minute because the episode was running short.
