When the Rotarran takes on replacement crew, Worf is stunned to discover that his estranged son Alexander has joined the Klingon Defence Force without telling him. Father and son clash repeatedly through arguments and misunderstandings, neither able to reach the other. In a battle against Dominion ships, Alexander finally distinguishes himself, earning his father's respect, and Martok welcomes him into his House. On occupied Deep Space Nine, Dukat brings his daughter Ziyal back to the station, hoping to use her friendship with Kira to draw the Bajoran major closer to him. When Ziyal's artwork is accepted for a prestigious exhibition, Dukat invites Kira to a celebration and presents her with an elegant dress. Kira is left to decide how far she is willing to let him into her life. In the end she turns him down, unwilling to compromise her principles.
