Three months after the station fell, the war is going badly for the Federation. Sisko loses command of the Defiant and is given a dangerous assignment instead: take a captured Jem'Hadar attack ship deep into enemy territory and destroy the Dominion's main store of ketracel-white. Joseph Sisko begs his son to get Jake off the occupied station. The ship's Jem'Hadar visor gives Sisko headaches, so Garak takes over the controls, and the crew narrowly survive an attack by a Starfleet ship that mistakes them for the enemy. On Deep Space Nine, Dukat and Weyoun clash over the minefield, Jake chafes against censorship and Odo uses his standing as a changeling to win a seat on the ruling council. Sisko's team destroys the facility, but the bomb goes off early and the badly damaged ship is left with no warp drive, seventeen years from the nearest starbase.
