As war with the Dominion draws closer, the station's mood is grim and Sisko is especially low. Jake hears that a 1951 Willie Mays rookie card is up for auction and, with Nog's help, sets out to buy it as a gift. The eccentric scientist Dr Elias Giger outbids them, but offers the card in exchange for parts for his cellular regeneration and entertainment chamber, a device he believes will make him immortal. Jake and Nog work through a chain of trades with the station's senior officers to collect everything. Meanwhile, Kai Winn weighs a Dominion offer of a non-aggression pact for Bajor. Returning to Giger's quarters, the boys find him missing and are beamed aboard Weyoun's ship to explain themselves. Weyoun accepts their story, and they leave with the card. A delighted Sisko receives his gift, his spirits lifted.
- 01Michael Dorn's directorial debut. He went on to direct two more Deep Space Nine episodes.
- 02Brian Markinson, who plays Dr Giger, had earlier appeared in Voyager's first season.
- 03It was conceived as a cheap, self-contained bottle show, meant to be fun before the season finale.
