Deep Space Nine needs a replacement part, so O'Brien takes a salvage team to Empok Nor, an abandoned Cardassian station. Garak and Nog join several engineers and security officers. Inside they find stasis tubes, two empty and one holding a dead Cardassian soldier. Soon their runabout is destroyed, stranding them, and two awakened Cardassian soldiers begin picking off the team one by one. The soldiers were treated with a drug that heightens hatred of outsiders. Garak kills them, but is exposed to the drug himself and turns on his companions, killing Amaro, taking Nog hostage and hunting O'Brien. O'Brien defeats him with a booby-trapped phaser, and the survivors return home with the part. Back on the station, a recovering Garak is ashamed, and O'Brien admits he had meant the trap to kill him.
- 01Bryan Fuller's original pitch had Worf and Garak aboard a derelict ship rather than a salvage mission to a station.
- 02Mike Vejar's second Deep Space Nine episode as director, after “The Darkness and the Light”, which was also based on a Fuller story.
- 03Hans Beimler's first draft was not well received, and later revisions added depth to the relationship between Garak and O'Brien.
