When Rom collapses with an ear infection and Quark refuses him sick leave, Bashir points out that the bar's staff have no rights at all. Quark then cuts everyone's wages, and Rom, inspired by O'Brien's tales of a union-leading ancestor, organises the workers into a union, something Ferengi law forbids. The staff go on strike, demanding better pay, shorter hours and paid sick leave, and the bar empties. The Ferengi Commerce Authority sends Liquidator Brunt to break the union, and Rom rallies the workers in the face of his threats. After Brunt's thugs beat Quark, the brothers strike a private deal: Quark will meet the workers' demands as long as Rom publicly disbands the union so the authorities never find out. Rom agrees, then quits the bar for good to become a repair technician on the station. Meanwhile, Worf, irritated by life on the station, moves his quarters aboard the Defiant.

  1. 01Armin Shimerman, a member of the Screen Actors Guild board, saw it as a serious drama about union and management disputes rather than pure comedy.
  2. 02Co-writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe was proud of writing what he called one of the most pro-labour episodes in television history.
  3. 03The on-screen chemistry between Max Grodénchik and Chase Masterson led the producers to develop Rom and Leeta as a couple.
