A Bajoran ship two centuries old emerges from the wormhole carrying Akorem Laan, a revered poet who disappeared long ago. He says the Prophets have sent him as their Emissary, and Sisko, never comfortable in the role, gladly hands it over. But Akorem wants to restore Bajor's ancient caste system, abandoned during the Cardassian occupation. Bajorans begin leaving their careers for the work their caste demands, and Kira prepares to resign her commission to become an artist. When a Vedek kills a man for defying his caste, Sisko realises how much harm is being done. He and Akorem enter the wormhole together so the Prophets can decide between them. They confirm Sisko as their Emissary, explaining that they brought Akorem forward to remind Sisko of his responsibilities. Akorem returns to his own time with no memory of the future. Meanwhile, Keiko and Molly return from Bajor, and Keiko is expecting a second child.
