Bringing his half-Bajoran daughter Ziyal home has cost Dukat his rank, and he now commands an old freighter. Kira is assigned to travel aboard it to a conference, and finds Ziyal there too, lonely and eager for friendship. When they reach the meeting place, the outpost has been destroyed by a Klingon Bird of Prey. Dukat sees a chance for revenge and a road back to power, and Kira, drawing on her years in the resistance, helps him turn the freighter into a disguised warship. They lure the Klingons in, disable their ship and seize it by using the transporter to swap the two crews, and Dukat destroys the freighter. Offered his old position, Dukat learns that the government will take no further action against the Klingons. He decides to fight his own private war instead and invites Kira to join him. She declines, but takes Ziyal back to the station with her.
