Odo takes charge of protecting Bajor's First Minister during a visit to the station, but the greatest danger may be to Odo's own heart.

Bajor's First Minister Shakaar comes to the station to discuss the planet's bid to join the Federation, and Odo and Worf must protect him from extremists of the True Way. Odo and Shakaar get on well, until Odo realises that Shakaar is falling for Kira, the woman Odo secretly loves. Distracted, Odo skips a security check, and a turbolift carrying Shakaar plunges down its shaft. Odo saves them by shape-shifting to stop the fall, but Sisko reprimands him for the lapse. When Kira tells Odo that she and Shakaar are now together, he keeps his feelings to himself. Worf catches the would-be assassin, but alone in his quarters Odo smashes the room apart. Quark, kept awake next door by the noise, offers some unexpectedly wise advice: tell her, or let her go. Odo chooses to step back, cancelling his weekly meetings with Kira and returning to his rounds.
- 01The idea came from Robert Hewitt Wolfe, inspired by the film The Bodyguard, with Odo as a protector falling for Kira.
- 02René Auberjonois improvised the loose strand of hair across Odo's face during his breakdown, inspired by a Japanese print of a defeated warrior.
- 03The plant Odo destroys was a gift from Kira in “The Abandoned”, and its pot was once his regeneration bucket.
