Bashir is enjoying his favourite holosuite programme, a 1960s spy adventure, with Garak, a real former spy, tagging along uninvited. Meanwhile a runabout explodes, and Eddington can only save Sisko, Kira, Dax, Worf and O'Brien by storing their patterns in the station's computer, including the holosuite. Their likenesses start appearing as characters in Bashir's game, and with the safeties disabled, any death in the story could mean the real person is lost. Bashir and Garak must keep the plot going without letting anyone die. Kira appears as a Russian agent, Anastasia Komananov, while Sisko plays Dr Noah, a megalomaniac who has been kidnapping scientists to help him flood the world. When Garak wants to quit, Bashir shoots him to keep him in the game. Captured at Noah's Mount Everest lair, Bashir plays the scenario his own way and sets Noah's doomsday plan in motion, buying time until Eddington can restore the crew.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. 01At nine days, it was the longest shoot of any DS9 episode, two days more than usual, because of extensive stunts and new sets.
  2. 02MGM complained about the James Bond-style approach, so later references to the holosuite programme were toned down.
  3. 03It was nominated for two Emmy Awards: music composition for a series, for Jay Chattaway's score, and hairstyling for a series.
