Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
A Cardassian freighter, the Bok'Nor, is destroyed shortly after leaving Deep Space Nine, and the evidence points to a saboteur in Starfleet uniform. Sisko's old friend Calvin Hudson, Starfleet's attaché to the colonies in the new demilitarised zone, arrives to help, but he is openly frustrated that the Federation has abandoned its colonists. Gul Dukat pays Sisko an unofficial visit, and together they witness unmarked Federation ships attacking Cardassians. On the station, a Vulcan named Sakonna tries to buy weapons through Quark. O'Brien confirms the freighter was destroyed with Federation technology. Then Dukat is kidnapped, and a group calling itself the Maquis claims responsibility. Sisko, Kira and Bashir follow the trail into the Badlands, where they come face to face with the Maquis and discover their leader is Hudson, who stuns Sisko's party.
- 01The story follows on from The Next Generation's “Journey's End”, which set up the demilitarised zone, and introduces the Maquis, later central to Star Trek: Voyager.
- 02The episode introduces the Badlands, a region of plasma storms that recurs in later Star Trek series.
- 03Bernie Casey, who plays Lt Cdr Cal Hudson, was a former American football player before turning to acting.
