Odo and Dax trace an unusual particle field to a village on a Gamma Quadrant planet, where the magistrate Colyus asks for help: twenty-two people have vanished. Odo forms a friendship with Taya, a curious young girl, while he investigates. The pair discover that the villagers themselves are holograms, sustained by a failing generator. When they shut it down to make repairs, everyone disappears except Rurigan, an old man and the only real person there. He explains that he fled the Dominion's conquest of his world and recreated his home and its people. Odo argues that the holograms' lives still matter, and the village is restored. As a parting gift, he shows Taya his shapeshifting. On the station, Kira begins a romance with Vedek Bareil, and Jake tells his father that he does not want to join Starfleet.
