Sisko and O'Brien find a colony of humans living without technology on an uncharted world, where their equipment fails and a charismatic leader expects them to stay.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
On a reconnaissance mission, Sisko and O'Brien detect humans on an uncharted planet. They beam down and find that a strange field has disabled all their technology. The settlers were stranded ten years earlier and now live simply, guided by Alixus, a writer and philosopher who believes technology makes people weak. She will not let the officers signal their runabout, even when a colonist dies for want of medicine, and expects them to work like everyone else. Sisko challenges her authority and is punished by being shut inside a small box exposed to the elements, returning to it rather than give in. O'Brien finds that the field comes from a hidden generator: Alixus arranged both the field and the stranding to build her ideal community. Kira and Dax arrive, and Alixus and her son Vinod leave with the officers, but the other colonists choose to stay on the world they have built.
- 01Michael Piller wanted a showcase for Sisko after “Second Sight”, stressing his courage and leadership.
- 02Jim Trombetta's original idea drew on the anti-technology primitivism of the Khmer Rouge.
- 03Richard Manning's only DS9 writing credit. His writing partner Hans Beimler later joined the staff in season four.
