Arjin, a young Trill hoping to be joined, arrives for a field evaluation with Jadzia, expecting the harsh treatment Curzon was known for. Instead he finds Jadzia relaxed and playful, which unsettles him even more. On a trip through the wormhole, their runabout picks up a strange mass that is brought back to the station for study. It turns out to be a tiny proto-universe, and it is expanding fast enough to threaten the station and eventually Bajor. Sisko prepares to destroy it until Dax detects signs of life inside, and the plan becomes to return it to the Gamma Quadrant. Meanwhile, Cardassian voles loose on the station are driving O'Brien to distraction. On the delicate journey back through the wormhole, Arjin keeps his nerve at the helm. Dax tells him she will recommend him for joining when he is ready.
