O'Brien and Dr Bashir answer a medical call to a Bajoran village, where the dying Sirah, the village storyteller, protects his people from the Dal'Rok, a destructive force that threatens them. During the ritual the Sirah collapses mid-tale, O'Brien finishes it, the creature disappears, and the villagers promptly hail him as their new Sirah. The Sirah's apprentice, Hovath, explains the secret: the Dal'Rok is created by the Sirah using an Orb fragment, giving a divided village a common enemy to unite against. When O'Brien's halting storytelling fails, Hovath steps up, tells the story with conviction, and takes his place as the new Sirah. On the station, Sisko mediates a border dispute between two Bajoran factions, one led by Varis Sul, a fifteen-year-old leader. After Jake and Nog befriend her, she finds the confidence to propose a compromise.
