Bajor is about to tap one of its moons, Jeraddo, for energy, and everyone living there must leave. Major Kira goes down to remove the last holdout, an elderly farmer named Mullibok, who escaped there during the Cardassian occupation and refuses to go. Charmed by his stories and his stubbornness, Kira stays, and when security officers try to remove him by force Mullibok is shot. Nursing him, Kira sees that she is now the authority forcing people from their homes, the very thing she once fought against. Yet the evacuation has to happen. In the end she destroys his kiln and sets fire to his cottage so that he has nothing left to stay for, then has him taken off the moon. Meanwhile Jake and Nog turn a stock of unwanted yamok sauce, through a chain of trades, into a plot of Bajoran land, which they sell to Quark for gold-pressed latinum.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. 01Writer Peter Allan Fields had intended Mullibok to be more manipulative and less sympathetic, a strong man who did not change at the end.
  2. 02Ira Steven Behr enjoyed the Jake and Nog subplot, calling the pair the Milo Minderbinders of Deep Space Nine, after the Catch-22 character.
  3. 03Rick Berman said Brian Keith's performance was better than he had expected.
