Kai Opaka, Bajor's spiritual leader, visits the station and asks Sisko to take her through the wormhole. Answering a distress signal, their runabout is shot down by satellites over a moon, and Opaka is killed in the crash, leaving Kira devastated. The survivors are caught between two factions, the Ennis and the Nol-Ennis, locked in endless war. Then the dead rise: Opaka and the fallen soldiers are revived by nanotechnology that repairs any injury. Dr Bashir learns the catch. The moon is a prison for both peoples, sentenced to die and revive forever, and the technology means those it has revived can never leave. Sisko tries to broker peace, but neither side will stop. Kira confronts the scars of her own years fighting the Cardassians. In the end Opaka chooses to stay behind, hoping to help the two peoples heal, and tells Sisko their paths will cross again.
