Answering a distress call, Kira and Dr Bashir find a Kobliad ship on fire. Aboard are security officer Ty Kajada and her prisoner, the criminal Rao Vantika, who dies despite Bashir's efforts. Kajada insists he has cheated death before and is still a threat. A valuable shipment of deuridium is due at the station, and Odo resents the arrival of Lt George Primmin, the Starfleet security officer sent to guard it. Bashir and Dax suspect that Vantika has hidden his consciousness in another mind, and suspicion falls on Kajada herself. In fact he has taken over Bashir, who quietly hires Quark to find mercenaries to seize the shipment. Kajada exposes the truth after finding a device hidden under Vantika's fingernail. Dax breaks Vantika's hold on Bashir, restoring the doctor, and Kajada destroys what is left of the criminal's mind for good.
- 01Morgan Gendel's original pitch had Vantika possessing Kajada, so that she would be hunting herself.
- 02Caitlin Brown's performance as Kajada led to her casting as Vekor in The Next Generation two-parter “Gambit”.
- 03Lt Primmin was set up as a recurring character but appeared in only two episodes.
