Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Starfleet sends Voyager its first official assignment in the Delta Quadrant: find Friendship 1, a probe launched from Earth centuries earlier carrying knowledge to share with other cultures. The crew traces it to a planet in the grip of nuclear winter. Its people learned antimatter technology from the probe and misused it, devastating their world. An away team meets survivors led by the bitter Verin, who blames humans for the catastrophe. Tom, Neelix and Joe Carey are taken hostage, and during tense negotiations Verin kills Carey. Seven suggests using nanoprobes to cure the radiation sickness and repair the atmosphere. The Doctor, in disguise, gets inside Verin's base and the hostages are freed. Torpedoes loaded with nanoprobes begin to heal the planet. The gentler Otrin takes charge, and the survivors see their skies clear for the first time.
- 01Josh Clark makes his final appearance as Lt Joe Carey, who is killed in this episode.
- 02The probe's message includes a piece by Antonio Vivaldi, and the away team finds a toy that plays the same music.
