Kes returns to Voyager after three years away, but she is older, angrier and far from the gentle friend the crew remembers.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Voyager answers a distress call from a small ship and finds an elderly, embittered Kes aboard. She rams Voyager, kills B'Elanna and vanishes back through time to 2371, the crew's first year in the Delta Quadrant. There she takes on her younger appearance, stuns her past self and secretly offers the Vidiians a deal: she will help them take Voyager if they get her home to Ocampa. Only Tuvok senses something is wrong, troubled by visions of events that have not yet happened. The Vidiians attack, and Janeway confronts the older Kes, who feels abandoned and blames the crew for nurturing her mental powers before she was ready. Janeway kills her in self-defence. Five years later, when the older Kes arrives again, Janeway and Tuvok are ready and prevent the collision. In engineering, a holographic message recorded years earlier by the young Kes urges her older self to remember the truth, and she leaves Voyager in peace.
- 01The story began with Rick Berman deciding he wanted Kes to return. He left it to the writing staff to find a way to bring her back.
- 02Jennifer Lien receives an “Also Starring” credit, keeping her former place in the opening titles.
- 03The 2371 scenes are set 56 days after “Caretaker”, between “Phage” and “Heroes and Demons”, while the Doctor is still choosing a name.
