After two weeks away in the Delta Flyer, Chakotay, Paris, Kim and Neelix return to Voyager and are soon haunted by flashes of combat. Piece by piece they recall a military operation to evacuate colonists from a planet called Tarakis, led by a commander named Saavedra. The colonists resisted, the soldiers panicked and opened fire, and 82 civilians died. Saavedra then destroyed the bodies to hide what had happened. The memories spread through the crew, causing real distress. Voyager traces them to Tarakis, where it finds a memorial: a device that transmits the memories of the massacre into the minds of anyone who comes near, so the atrocity will never be forgotten. The device is failing. Despite the pain it causes, Janeway decides it should continue, and she restores its power and leaves a warning beacon.
