As the crew race the Malon to build a new shuttle and recover a lost probe, Torres is quietly running holodeck programs with the safety protocols switched off.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Torres has been running dangerous holodeck programs, from orbital skydiving to combat simulations, with the safeties disabled. When a multispatial probe is lost in a gas giant's atmosphere and the Malon move to salvage it, Paris leads a project to design a tough new shuttle, the Delta Flyer. Torres, normally the ship's best engineer, contributes little. After she is found injured, the Doctor uncovers a history of untreated injuries and Janeway takes her off duty. Chakotay goes through her holodeck files and realises how far her self-destructive behaviour has gone since she learned of the Maquis massacre. She admits she has felt numb for months and has been trying to feel something. Torres joins the Delta Flyer's first mission, where a Malon attack breaches the hull. She improvises a force field, the crew recover the probe, and Torres begins to heal.
- 01Roxann Dawson helped develop the story, talking with Brannon Braga and Kenneth Biller about how Torres might cope with depression.
- 02The first appearance of the Delta Flyer, designed by Rick Sternbach.
- 03Torres's orbital skydiving costume came from a deleted Star Trek Generations scene, where it was worn by William Shatner.
