During an emergency beam-out from a damaged shuttle, Seven's nanoprobes contaminate the Doctor's mobile emitter. The nanoprobes take over a lab and build a maturation chamber, growing a new Borg drone from a crewman's DNA and enhanced with 29th-century technology. Rather than destroy it, Janeway lets it mature, and Seven takes on the job of teaching it. Free of the Collective, the drone chooses the name One and proves a fast, eager learner, helping to improve the ship's systems. But One's presence draws the Borg, who send a sphere to retrieve him. To protect Voyager, One boards the sphere and pilots it into a proto-nebula, destroying it. He is beamed back badly injured but raises a force field to stop the Doctor treating him, knowing the Borg will never stop hunting him. He dies, leaving Seven to face real grief.
