Voyager comes across a battle between cloaked ships, and a woman named Kellin asks for Chakotay by name and requests asylum. She belongs to the Ramurans, whose pheromones make outsiders forget them within hours of contact. Kellin explains that she came aboard a month earlier as a tracer, hunting a runaway Ramuran, and that she and Chakotay fell in love. Now she has fled her own isolationist society to be with him. Chakotay doubts her at first but slowly falls for her again. Then another tracer, Curneth, arrives and hits Kellin with a neurolytic emitter that wipes her memories of Voyager and of Chakotay. Unwilling to keep her against her new wishes, Chakotay lets her go home. Knowing a Ramuran computer virus has erased all records and that his own memory will soon fade, he writes their story down on paper.
