Starfleet's reply through the alien relay network arrives badly garbled, and Voyager traces it to an array powered by a quantum singularity. As the data is recovered, letters from home begin to arrive. Janeway learns that her fiancé Mark has married someone else. Tuvok receives news of a new addition to his family, while Chakotay and Torres learn that their Maquis comrades have been wiped out by the Dominion. When Tuvok and Seven take a shuttle to stabilise the transmission, they are captured by the Hirogen, a fierce species who live to hunt and who regard their captives as prey. Janeway frees them by turning the power of the array's singularity against the Hirogen, but the rescue destroys the array and with it the crew's link with home.
