Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Neelix is killed while collecting protomatter from a nebula. Around eighteen hours later, Seven of Nine revives him using Borg nanoprobes. Neelix is grateful but deeply shaken: he has always believed in an afterlife, the great forest where his family would be waiting, yet he remembers nothing at all. Chakotay guides him through a vision quest, but it only deepens his despair, as visions, including one of his dead sister Alixia, suggest that life has no meaning. As his body begins to reject the nanoprobes, Neelix decides to end his life by beaming himself into the nebula. Chakotay tries to talk him round, and Ensign Wildman asks for his help with her daughter Naomi, who is frightened and will only let Neelix tuck her in. Realising how much he matters to the people around him, Neelix steps back and goes to comfort Naomi, assuring her that he has chased the monster away.
- 01Brooke Stephens' only appearance as Naomi Wildman. Scarlett Pomers took over the role in season five.
- 02An early concept had Wildman die and return wrong, threatening her daughter. UPN and Rick Berman rejected it as too dark.
- 03Ethan Phillips called it “a beautiful show” and a very existential one.
